File workflow is the dimension buyers overlook. The Glowforge Aura accepts laser engraving files in SVG, PNG, JPG, and PDF. According to Glowforge's support documentation, you can pull those files in directly. That's a huge advantage when a client sends a logo and needs it cut tonight.
Industrial services usually want DXF or AI files with clean vector outlines and proper kerf compensation. You also need to specify material, thickness, and finish. That's easy for a pro, but it's not drag-and-drop.
For file workflow: if your team needs to turn around laser engraving files quickly, or you take files from non-technical people, the Aura wins. If you have a manufacturing engineer sending production DXF files, industrial wins.
What I'd do with a deadline in 48 hours
Here's the practical version.
- If the parts are wood, acrylic, leather, or coated metal and the job is small enough to run on the Aura, I'd cut it in-house. No quote, no queue, no shipping window.
- If the job involves bare metal, thick material, or high volume, I'd call an industrial laser cutting service, pay the rush fee, and get a pickup time in writing.
- If urgent small jobs keep happening, buy a desktop laser and keep one job shop on speed dial for the work you shouldn't do in-house.
There's something satisfying about watching a rush order go out the door because you made it yourself, instead of refreshing a tracking page at 11 PM.
Don't expect any single machine to do everything. That's not how professional work goes.
