Why Your Glowforge Aura Can’t Engrave Bare Metal
It’s Friday afternoon. The phone rings. I knew what the voice on the other end would say before they finished the first sentence.
“I’ve got 40 stainless steel tumblers due Tuesday. My new laser runs the file, does its thing, and the tumbler looks untouched. Did I get a broken unit?”

Three Completely Different Tools, One Confusing Name
The root problem is that “laser engraver” is not a single category. It’s an umbrella term covering at least three machines that barely overlap:
Diode lasers. The budget end, often under $500. Good for light engraving and thin cuts, with real speed limits. Fine for hobby projects.
CO2 lasers. This is what the Glowforge Aura uses. A gas-filled tube produces a 10.6-micron wavelength, which is absorbed by organic materials—wood, acrylic, leather, paper, glass. That’s why the Aura is genuinely excellent for multi-material work in that range.
Fiber lasers. A solid-state source emitting around 1.06 microns. The shorter wavelength is absorbed by bare metal instead of bouncing off it. Fiber machines are the workhorses for stainless steel tumblers, jewelry engraving, and industrial metal marking.
These are not faster and slower versions of the same idea. They’re different physics. Buying a “laser” without knowing which type you need is like buying “a saw” and ending up with a fret saw when you meant a circular one.
Why does this matter for the Glowforge Aura specifically? Because a lot of the messaging around it implies metal engraving is part of the package. The reality is more specific.
“Metal Engraving” Means Three Different Things
The phrase “engraver machine for metal” gets thrown around in product listings and videos. But in practice, it splits into three scenarios:
- Anodized aluminum. The anodized coating reacts to the laser, leaving a clean mark. The bare metal underneath is untouched.
- Coated stainless steel. Same idea. The coating burns or changes color. Most “engraved” tumblers are coated, which is why the job works.
- Bare metal. Uncoated steel, brass, copper, aluminum. A CO2 beam reflects off these surfaces. Nothing happens.
Glowforge’s own materials guidance documents these limits. The Aura can mark coated metals and anodized aluminum, and it handles a wide range of non-metals. It cannot deeply engrave bare metal. That’s not a defect. It’s the wavelength.
To be fair, most buyers never read the materials guide until after the first failed batch. By then, the demo videos have already done their job—and demos are always shot on materials that flatter the machine.
Nobody films the bare steel sheet that comes out looking exactly as it went in.
Why Small Shops Feel This One Most
I get why people choose an entry-level CO2 machine. Budgets are real. A Glowforge Aura laser cutter sits at a price point a small shop can justify without a loan. The problem isn’t the choice. It’s not knowing there was a choice.
Here’s the question I wish every buyer asked before purchasing: What materials are actually on your table?
For a sign shop cutting acrylic and wood all day, the Aura is a legitimate workhorse. For a custom gift business engraving wedding favors, it can do a lot—with caveats around metal. For a shop that takes industrial metal-marking contracts, it was never going to get there.
Small shops also feel the wrong purchase harder than large ones. A big shop buys a second machine and moves on. A small one eats three months of profit and still faces a capability gap on every future metal job.

The Quiet Cost of the Wrong Laser
I still kick myself for not pushing back harder in March 2024. A client had bought a CO2 laser after watching a demo that promised metal engraving. Three weeks later, their biggest account asked for engraved stainless steel tags. The machine couldn’t do it. They lost the account while I was still trying to line up a rental.
That’s when the compounding starts.

What to Do Instead of Panicking
Start with materials, not machines.
If 70% of your work is wood, acrylic, leather, anodized aluminum, or glass, the Glowforge Aura is a defensible investment. I mean that sincerely. It’s a solid multi-material machine for small studios, with genuinely useful capabilities in that range.
If your work leans toward bare metal, stainless steel rewards, or jewelry marking, you’re looking at a fiber laser. The Honest Summary

The Aura is a good machine. It’s not the right machine for every job. Close that gap between expectation and physics before your next order lands—and you won’t need to make an emergency call.
