Glowforge Aura Buying Checklist: Evaluating a Craft Laser Cutting Machine for Your Business

If you are an office manager or purchasing person suddenly asked to buy a laser cutter, this is the checklist I wish I had before I ordered ours. There are six things to do before you commit.

Quick background: I handle office purchasing for a 20-person product design company. That means roughly $200,000 a year in orders across 15 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. In late 2024, a client asked for 150 engraved samples and 80 cut fabric pieces in ten days. Our usual outside vendor said two weeks. So we decided to bring it in-house. I had about a week to choose a machine.

I have mixed feelings about brand-name laser machines. On one hand, they feel expensive. On the other, the cheap route has its own cost that only appears after you place the order. The surprise wasn't the machine quality difference - it was how much support and software mattered when a deadline was fixed.

Step 1: Don't start with wattage

When you search 'CO2 lasers for sale', you'll see big numbers and bigger promises. Wattage matters, but it matters less than matching the machine to your material list. The Glowforge Aura craft laser cutting machine is a CO2 laser, and for our uses - wood, acrylic, natural fabric, leather, coated metal tumblers - that wavelength does the job. If you are mostly engraving bare metal, a fiber laser is a different tool, and you should look there instead.

Also check duty cycle. A machine that cuts for 15 minutes then needs a long cooldown will kill a production schedule. I almost missed that because the marketing page didn't mention it.

Step 2: Make a material list and test it yourself

No machine can claim every material. Our list had six items: 3mm birch plywood, 6mm acrylic, cotton canvas, leather scraps, kraftboard, and coated stainless steel blanks. Before buying, I asked the supplier for sample files. We didn't have time for full samples, but I found videos from other users doing the same cuts. It was enough to make a decision with my eyes open.

If you need to laser engrave blanks, check what coating is on them. The same machine that engraves a coated tumbler beautifully can do nothing on bare stainless. That is not a machine failure. That is a material-selection issue.

Step 3: Map the software workflow before you buy

This is the step most people skip. The Glowforge Aura laser engraver uses a cloud-based design workflow. That was fine for us because our team already uses browser-based tools. But if your shop is offline, or your designers use proprietary software with tight export controls, the machine will look better in the demo than it performs on Monday.

We lost about a full day learning how files actually cut. Not because the machine is hard to use, but because file prep is different. Hinges, kerf, nesting, order of operations - none of that appears in the glossy unboxing videos. Budget training time.

Step 4: Add ventilation and space to the budget

The machine cost is not the total cost. We originally looked at a smaller unit, then realized our workshop room had no window. The filtered air system became a requirement, not an accessory. That added a meaningful number to the budget - I don't remember the exact amount, maybe $300, maybe closer to $350 if you include shipping.

Measure the door, the table, and the clearances. A laser cutter needs room around it for material loading and cooling. The Aura is compact, which was a major reason I picked it, but you can't install it flush against a wall.

Step 5: Price the total cost, not the machine

As of January 2025, Glowforge's site lists the Aura base bundle at around $1,200. Verify current pricing because bundles change. That does not include materials, filter, extra bed sheets, or the time you will spend setting up your design templates.

Then compare that to a cheaper import. The sticker gap is real. But the total cost gap shrinks when you add shipping, potential duty, a replacement tube, troubleshooting hours, and support that answers in a week. I'm not saying avoid budget machines. I'm saying compare total cost, and treat support as part of the price.

Step 6: Test before your deadline - or pay for certainty

This is where my 'time certainty' opinion comes in. We paid more to buy from a distributor that had the Aura in stock and could guarantee arrival before the client deadline. The tempting option was a unit that 'probably' shipped in three days. Probably is not a delivery date when your client is waiting.

Had a week to decide. Normally I'd want side-by-side demos and multiple quotes. There was no time. I went with the option that gave us a firm promise plus a return policy. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the project timeline. But with the CEO saying 'make it work', I made the best call I could with incomplete information.

We have run maybe 200 jobs on the Aura since February. Maybe 150, I'd have to check the job log. The exact number doesn't matter. What matters is that the machine worked on the day we needed it.

Common mistakes I almost made

  • Assuming a laser cutter is a dedicated fabric cutting machine. It cuts natural fabric well, but it does not handle rolls or high-volume sewing patterns the way an industrial fabric cutter does. If your main product is fabric, buy a cutter built for that.
  • Ignoring operator training time. If the person running the machine has never used vector files, add at least two days to your rollout.
  • Using a laser for a one-off job. For a small batch, an outside service is usually cheaper and faster. For repeat production, in-house starts to pay off.
  • Expecting deep metal cutting. A CO2 laser engraves and marks some metals, but for thick metal cutting, look at waterjet or CNC, not a laser.

If your decision is being forced by a deadline, you don't need the perfect machine. You need the one that fits your materials, your team's skill, and your ability to get help when it goes wrong. The Glowforge Aura craft laser cutting machine worked for us for exactly that reason. It wasn't the cheapest option I considered, but it came with the most certainty. I'm not 100% sure it's right for every business, but it was right for ours.
